Vitamin A Benefits
As kids, we don’t understand why it’s important to make sure we get enough rest, get enough exercise and eat right. But as adults, we understand the link between healthy eating to get the right vitamin intake and how it can make us possibly look younger than we actually are.
So, I’ll get a little sciencey for a second. Vitamins are broken down as either fat or water-soluble elements. This just means it’s how they’re broken down in the body or how they dissolve. One of the important vitamins for looking younger is Vitamin A. This vitamin is also known as retinol and it is fat soluble.
Usually, the first sign of aging shows up on the outer layer of skin. You’ll notice that your skin might start to look and feel drier and even begin to flake. Does it seem leathery or wrinkle easily?
Vitamin A helps the body rejuvenate skin cells and build collagen as well as help promote the growth of new skin cells. It also has antioxidant properties that can reduce free radicals which lead to damaged cells and could help with skin inflammation (like acne)
If you’ll check out your anti-aging skin creams, you’ll probably find it contains retinol. Just use caution when using these creams as sometimes it can cause irritation.
Besides skin creams and supplements, there are some natural ways that you can make sure you’re incorporating enough Vitamin A into your daily food intake.
Vitamin A in Food
I don’t know too many people that like liver, but if you do, then you’re in luck. This meat has plenty of Vitamin A and by consuming 3 ounces of liver every other week, you’ll be getting a healthy helping of this nutrient.
Dairy products like ice cream, milk, cheese and yogurt are good sources of Vitamin A. Since egg yolks have lots of Vitamin A, you’ll want to make sure that you are having an egg for breakfast (& don’t believe that eggs aren’t good for you! That’s a myth!)
Fruits and veggies should be where you look for your daily dose. Veggies like sweet potatoes and greens like spinach or broccoli. When choosing greens, remember that dark, leafy greens are the best. Eat fruits like cantaloupe, mangos, apricots, and peaches.
Vitamin A in a Supplement
Getting enough Vitamin A will help keep your skin healthy. It is important that you try to get most of your vitamins from the foods you eat – preferably from organic fruits and veggies. Sometimes it just isn’t enough though.
So, if you find you need more Vitamin A, please consider taking a multivitamin mineral supplement. Think of your body like a car. A car needs gas, oil, transmission fluid and a battery to run. Your body needs 90 different nutrients to run – and they all work together – so don’t just feed it one nutrient expecting to see a difference. You need all of them!
