Why it’s harder to lose weight as you get older and what you can do to combat it
It should come as no surprise to anyone that as we get older our bodies change and some things just become more difficult. It becomes harder to move around and be active like you used to when you were 20. It gets harder to digest certain foods you used to love to eat. It gets harder to stay up late at night. It just seems like it gets harder and harder to do the things you used to love to do.

So, why is it harder for us to lose weight as we age? What is it about getting older that makes this task seem flat-out impossible to achieve? In this article, we will explore why it is difficult to shed those unwanted pounds and what you can do to effectively lose weight despite aging.
Metabolism Starts Slowing As We Age
As you get older, your body starts to operate at a slower pace and certain parts just don’t seem to work like they used to. Our metabolisms are usually one of the first things to go. And you always thought it was your eyesight! See, after high school, we find it harder to eat the junk we used to and still function at our best. We start feeling more lethargic after greasy foods and seem to gain more weight faster than ever before.
As we get older, our metabolisms slow down. I really feel like mine started to really slow down when I hit 40. This means we don’t process these bad foods as fast as we did when we were teens. This causes us to gain more weight from smaller amounts of bad foods and drinks. That’s why it harder for us to shed that weight the older we get. harder to lose weight

Harder to Move as we Age
As we get older, things like our joints, muscles, and bones start to weaken. We can lose our ability to easily move and our flexibility and agility decrease as well. This makes it harder to exercise and even more challenging to do strenuous exercises. This exercise is what helps us to lose the weight that’s been piling on. It certainly seems easier and faster to gain the weight than to lose it right?
The real trick to battling this is to just keep moving. It’s never too late to start, but it’s also not as easy. You’ll have to learn what your new limitations are. Maybe it’s as simple as parking your car farther out at the grocery store or taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator.
Try a new fitness class at the gym but don’t go hog wild your first time. I did that with a class once and thought I was going to die for a week. I was SO sore! You will need to come up with new routines to best accommodate your needs but still challenge and work your muscles. As an older woman, menopause is not your friend! It is SO important for you to incorporate weight-bearing exercises into your exercise routine. This is a must!
And don’t forget you will need to find a new way to work your exercise into your busier schedule. Hit the gym before work, at lunchtime or in the evening. Put it on your calendar and attend, just like you would any other meeting. harder to lose weight
Set in Our Ways
As we get older, it gets harder and harder for us to change. You get set in your ways and comfortable with your routines. You don’t want to change them. I get that. What was once a temporary solution on a busy day has become your new normal. You don’t remember the last time you went to the gym, even though you always promise yourself that this will be the week you get back into the routine. harder to lose weight
You have to challenge this. It’s nowhere near easy to do, but it’s the only way to get moving again and lose the weight despite your age. You have to challenge yourself to change your routine. Maybe start by choosing the healthier food swap.
Switch the diet drink for a sugar free lemonade like this one. If you still want the sparkling water, look for a zero sugar (zero artificial sugar too!) drink. Then work on moving to drinking more water. Water with lemon or lime or even some True Citrus Lemonade is awesome.
Once you’ve tackled that choose your next biggest challenge. For me it was eating bread. I moved to lettuce wraps or salads or whole grain crackers. So figure out what you are will to change and stick with these changes to improve your quality of life.
Weight wants to stick around
The older we get, the more our weight likes us. It’s comfortable right where it is and doesn’t have plans of leaving any time soon. You have to do more than you did as a kid to stand a chance of shedding it.
It’s no longer enough to just work out or jump on a fad diet for a few months. You have to actively live a healthier lifestyle or you won’t stand a chance of keeping those lost pounds gone. The more active you are and the better decisions you make for your health and your body regularly, the easier losing weight will become.
